inally, we had the plumbing and wiring channelled into the walls and a complete wireless system fitted, which is a must if building from scratch – why add messy wires if you can avoid it?

Did you change the garden?
When we were planning the garden, we wanted to create several outdoor spaces for relaxing and entertaining, and we really managed to do this even though the garden isn’t huge. We used bamboo to screen off an area by the conservatory doors and create a private dining area that can’t be seen from the neighbours’ gardens and is quite warm on breezy nights. Through the bamboo – or out from the other side of the conservatory – the more traditional garden area is used for barbecues and parties. We couldn’t resist adding a bit of colour for the winter with a copper water feature, which, we later found out, is much easier to maintain than plants.

How did you furnish your home?
The cream sofas in the living room, the Italian-style bed and the lights in our bedroom are pieces that we brought with us from the previous house – we sold most of the furniture with the house as it was made to fit the rooms there. The rest of our things from the previous house are still in the loft as they really didn’t work here, but might do in the next place. The idea of working with a blank canvas made me a little bit more daring in this house. I would usually choose classic designs and furnishings, so not trying to make a room fit around a piece of furniture has been very liberating. And although we still opted for light, neutral colours and dark woods, which might not seem very daring, bringing together the original cottage features with modern furnishings and adding retro style with cushions and prints in bright colours was definitely daring for me.

The Italian Bed (above) and the matching lights were from Selfridges (0870 837 7377) and were brought from the family’s previous house
